Has anyone ever actually taken down a client website due to nonpayment? I've joked about it plenty, but I've got one such website recently finished (although not yet launched, payment is late) that I am darn near ready to take down.

never had the pleasure. Seems like a reasonable threat that might help you gain some traction though. It's probably a good step before getting / threatening with legal action and see if it helps. Are they responsive at least?

Yes, but most frequently for nonpayment of hosting.

I'm kind of the runt of the team, and my contact keeps telling me to wait, wait, wait. And I keep asking when, when, when? Another few days and I'll probably take action.

I've never been in a circumstance to do so.
Sounds like it could get a bit sticky unless you were hosting the site yourself and they weren't paying for the hosting fees.
Did you have a contract with this client? Within that contract you should have written in how you have the right to do so.
Another way to avoid this is to do all your work in a development area and then flip the switch when they have paid.

good point on the contract @Thommy. I love to gather ideas for how to write better contracts. Always best to be as rigid as possible up front to protect yourself. Someone doesn't want to sign a contract because you're protecting yourself might not be the right client for you.
This of course has nothing to do with @Ricky's issue, just saying.
@Ricky, have you gotten paid anything yet?

No percentage. No contract. I'm kind of screwed. I'm sure they'll come through, though, because they are kind of a big name. But still annoying.

I said "Please tell [client name] to send payment" and later today the response was "You should have a check tomorrow or wednesday."
