Future Meeting Ideas (6 posts)

I've heard a few discussions about visiting the School for the Blind as a possible "meeting." I think that would be a very cool idea. However, from previous discussions I believe that there may be some issues with timing, availability etc. So, if people are interested in something like this, I'll use this opportunity to encourage those of you who are interested to contact the school and propose the idea to the group.

In general, I want to encourage, and also beat a dead horse, to tell everyone that there is no ring leader here, so if you want something, or something more out of the group, feel free to take control and make it happen. I can pretty much guarantee you'll have the support of the group in doing so.

Also, please use this space to jot down any other ideas you might have to get the ball rolling and hopefully put a stake in the ground. If the group agrees on the idea, then make it happen. Thanks for hearing me out. I'm really enjoying the group and looking forward to the leadership side to continue to grow.

Does anyone have any experience with the Dreamweaver Developer Toolkit? That might be a good topic for a future discussion.

I think this may have been covered in a previous meeting but I'd love some insight into others design/development processes and general work flow. It would be interesting to see how we could improve our own processes by learning how other do theirs.

I'm also extremely interested in beefing up my programming/design skills. Perhaps we could share tips/tricks/sites that we use in our work and learning.

Okay, fresh out of ideas for now. :) More later...

For those that don't know, I'm the blond chic that brought a baby to a bar. :D

We could hit some of the following:
*Intro to AIR apps (lookin at you Greg!)
    *Flash overview
*Best CSS practices / why things work this way in FF and this way in IE
*When tables are ok - and how to make them look awesome
*Intro to Magento & the X-Men - or intro to e-commerce overview
*Securing your website & web app (maybe break this down into different categories over different meetings)
    *2009 design trends!
*How many web designers does it take to change a lightbulb
    *Web hosting
*How to get started with LAMP

We could probably spend a whole meeting just going over plugins and security for wordpress from what it sounded like last night. So keeping that in mind, a lot of these potential topics are really broad and could/should be broken up and refined.

@angela, we did more or less cover some of your request for information about design process at our previous meeting. If you would like to review 2 of the 3 presentations, you can find the links here: http://www.refreshlouisville.org/forums/topic.php?id=53. I don't use Dreamweaver, so not sure what the Developer Toolkit is. I would guess it's a little too hyper-focused for a meeting topic, but I'll defer to others if there is a desire to discuss. Greatly appreciate your feedback and activity! Kuddos for bringing your baby to a bar as well!

@bryan, I'd dig hearing more about AIR development as well. I'd be happy to cover a Flash overview, if you had some ideas of what you'd like to hear about. FWIW, my favorite place for CSS table designs: http://icant.co.uk/csstablegallery/. Also, good recent SM post on the topic if you didn't catch it: http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2008/08/13/top-10-css-table-designs/

I'd also love some discussion of mobile app development as well as just mobile web processes, best practices, etc. This could include iPhone, but certainly not limited to that only.

    Thanks guys for the feedback.

@jables, yeah, I have read that Smashing article several times. I just figured that it'd be a good thing to touch on for others. I had seen that icant.co.uk site before, but didn't bookmark it, and never googled it, so thanks!

Anyone have any more ideas or nominations or previously posted ideas for this month's meetup?
