Thanks to a one Miss Deanna Mitchell I came across the Google Font Directory today. Gives you simple stylesheet hosted by Google with all the @font-face goodness you need to render said font in your page.

The link looks like so:

<link href='http://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Cantarell' rel='stylesheet' type='text/css'>

And then all you need to do is declare font-family:"Cantarell" for your element in your stylesheet and away you go. Pretty handy.

They also provide a way to build a small stack including weights and variants in 1 call to a stylesheet as seen in the API documentation:
http://code.google.com/apis/webfonts/docs/getting_started.html#Syntax

plagued as always by this, but found this post today:
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/312022/use-double-classes-in-ie6-css

seems like a couple of potential solutions in there, or at least workarounds. Also, nobody seems to refute much of this in the comments, so I'm a little unclear. Outside of my own trial and error, anybody have any ideas or input on this?

@jables Reminds me of film critics. They don't have to be producers or directors to be respected or successful. And 4 or 10 color offset printing won't determine a successful periodical.

So all that said, Atlas looks like pretty incredible software. It seems we just don't like the the message that says knowing how things work isn't important.

hmmm, good point @ricky. I do think there is another side to this, that is *somewhat* valid. At least iWeb and Rapidweaver produce valid xhtml for the most part, as do a lot of the templates in Dreamweaver if I remember correctly.

Aren't there successful Basketball coaches who couldn't sink a 3-point shot for their life, but can guide a team to victory? I guess the coach has a deep understanding of how the game works, and can see errors, even if he himself can't put the right spin on the ball. Maybe those coaches are just very rare occurrences, just like there may be a designer who doesn't understand the web at all but designs circles around the rest of us. I guess the argument is in general, it's considered crucial. Especially when it comes to building applications and working with IA, UX, etc.

I guess there is something to be said about software like iWeb or RapidWeaver. They have their place. Like a microwave in a kitchen. A real cook, however, wouldn't dare use such a device.

Another vote for you need to know how to build a website before you can design an effective one.

I've never known a case to be otherwise. I'll let you know if I come across one.
