Thanks Joe for posting this and capturing thoughts from our May meeting. Some thoughts:

Would love to have Jared Spool come talk, but we'd need to do a lot more planning and fundraising than normal to get a decent space, etc. The taproom wouldn't cut it. I've seen Jared speak at An Event Apart and he's awesome.

Would love a demo of some inspiration sites or as you have "Successful design in..." and somebody could do a case study or something. May take this on myself actually.

Not sure what Compass is so I guess i'd be up for a presentation regarding it if someone was game

I like the idea of an open critique. Maybe we just have a projector and a laptop and people can show in progress (client permitting) or recent work and ask for feedback and critique.

I'd love for people to showcase recent work coming out of the Louisville area. We're all building cool stuff everyday for ourselves, the public and our clients. Similarly to the critique maybe everybody has a chance to show off what they're been working on in more of a presentation rather than critique. They could then answer questions, etc. I'm thinking this is a good topic for July actually.

Again, thanks Joe for getting this started, others, please add and discuss. We're always looking for input but it's hard to come by sometimes.

Hey folks, finally getting around to posting some ideas for future discussion topics and more. This is a mix of ideas stemming from my own research and thinking, as well as a number of ideas that came about through some submissions I received and discussion after the last event. I figured I'd go ahead and start the thread, and see how people are feeling about this list. This really is about the group and it's members, so any additional thoughts or possible ideas? We're all ears and eyes. We'd love to hear 'em. Thanks a ton, folks!

Topic List (thus far):
Legal Issues for Early Stage Startups/Freelancers
Successful Design in the Music/Movies/Comics/Literature Web Worlds
Video On The Web
Revealing Design Treasures from Amazon (this was a talk given at a Philly Refresh meetup by Jared Spool that might be interesting if we can bring him in - http://www.uie.com/about/)
Design Trends (or the occasional lack-there-of) in Political/Government Websites
Better Understanding of TypeKit, @font-face, and the move towards accessible web font usage
How You Can Use Twitter
Sass and Compass
Flexible Web Templates for Various Content (from writing more flexible CSS to generating different on the server based on content properties)
Responsive Web Design (see: http://www.alistapart.com/articles/responsive-web-design/)
Design/Function Critique: Mobile Web/Apps vs. Desktop Environment vs. Print

Also, a couple of other ideas that we can do on a regular/semi-regular basis:
Monthly Site Critique/Discussion
Possible Lunch/Breakfast Meet-ups

We need to lock down a topic or presenter for Refresh this month. There have been some topics thrown around both in the forums and at the last meeting. If you are interested in presenting on one of the topics you or someone else recommended, please let us know by posting here. If not, we at least need some topics for discussion.

Thanks to a one Miss Deanna Mitchell I came across the Google Font Directory today. Gives you simple stylesheet hosted by Google with all the @font-face goodness you need to render said font in your page.

The link looks like so:

<link href='http://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Cantarell' rel='stylesheet' type='text/css'>

And then all you need to do is declare font-family:"Cantarell" for your element in your stylesheet and away you go. Pretty handy.

They also provide a way to build a small stack including weights and variants in 1 call to a stylesheet as seen in the API documentation:
http://code.google.com/apis/webfonts/docs/getting_started.html#Syntax

Hey Matt. Nobody has really approached the topic but I'd certainly be interested to hear more about YUI and others. I've touched a few others like Blueprint etc but not enough to truly understand the benefits, etc.

I will say that our discussion about Transcending CSS next Tuesday in most cases goes against what a lot of Frameworks do. Would be interesting to have the other side of the conversation in a future meeting.

Hopefully we'll catch up on Tuesday.?

I haven't looked over past presentation so you might have already done this:

Would it be valuable to others to present an overview of popular CSS, Javascript frameworks? I have begun using Yahoo's YUI (Yahoo User Interface Library) framework which has been a pleasant experience so far (for the one site I have developed with it). YUI provides CSS, Reset, and Javascript libraries with fantastic documentation and examples. Not as flashy as jQuery, jQuery UI or Moo Tools, but Yahoo's best argument is that they use these libraries themselves and they are 'battle-tested' with heavy traffic.

My own site uses the YUI library for a grid layout and jQuery for effects so mixing libraries is also an option.

http://developer.yahoo.com/yui/2/

Planning our upcoming meeting for Tuesday May 18th. If you have any desire to speak, present or have any idea for topics or discussions please post here. If nobody speaks up for presenting we'll likely just have a roundtable-like discussion as we did in February and pick a few topics.

i have a copy of tech tool pro which may be able to help you sir. It's a bit more powerful than disk utility and you can boot from it. I'll bring it to Refresh on Tuesday.

If you still need to get another, all I can say is that I went to CompUSA a few years ago and got one for my iBook, but as far as I know it's not in business in town any more.

That being said, i did get a keyboard replaced on my powerbook from Elan a while back. Their pricing was good. Might at least add them to your list of "to considers". I think either Apple Store or MacAuthority are probably both good, might just be a matter of turnaround and price.

Sorry man, hope your day turns around.

Needs some updating, but here's what I got: » http://www.brianbrooks.org

(moved from Louisville to Hood River Oregon a couple months back - hope that doesn't disqualify me - still rockin the 502 area code :)

It's not bad. Hard to figure out who exactly they're marketing to. Seems like entry level stuff in some cases. Maybe it's just their tone and presentation in that they are very young and (as far as I know) unknown.

That being said, content is pretty good, decent production and a cool concept. I'm always up for tutorials and video podcasts. Thanks for sharing.

Oh, and yes, the "tagline" they are using is really annoying and hardly original.

A co-worker sent me a link to Doctype today. Don't know really what to think of it. Right off the back I don't like that they stole A List Apart's tag line. I do like that the hosts are one designer and one developer, but the transitions are already driving me a little crazy. Thoughts?

After way too many months and never finding enough time to get to work on it, we finally launched the new version of missiondata.com I've been talking about for the past 9 months. Still a lot to do, mainly in the form of a little less text and some more visuals to communicate ideas, but it's worlds above where our site was 2 days ago.

Have a look and would love to get feedback from others.
